PH3 fumigation involves releasing hydrogen phosphide gas inside a sealed enclosure (ship hold, container, silo, tarpaulin-covered warehouse). The gas penetrates deep into the commodity, eliminating 100% of eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of major stored-product pests (weevils, lesser grain borers, flour beetles, bruchids).

Diagnosis & preparation
Commodity analysis, dosage calculation based on volume and temperature, enclosure selection (hold, container, tarpaulin). Rigorous sealing to ensure a stable lethal concentration throughout the exposure period.
Injection & exposure
Placement of aluminium / magnesium phosphide tablets or pellets. Gradual release of PH3 gas via hydrolysis. Controlled exposure period — typically 5 to 7 days depending on temperature and humidity.
Forced ventilation & residue control
Controlled ventilation of the enclosure. Residual concentration measurements with a calibrated electrochemical detector. Validation of the drop below the WHO threshold (0.1 ppm) before any human handling or reintegration into the logistics chain.
Validation & fumigation certificate
Issuance of the official numbered, signed and stamped fumigation certificate. Document accepted by all phytosanitary authorities (USA, EU, Asia, Middle East) for customs clearance and export. Full traceability retained for 5 years.
